Big Carl, the world’s largest crane, has lifted into place the 245-tonne dome of Hinkley Point C’s second reactor building.
The 14m-tall dome closes the 44m-high reactor building.
Work on Unit 2 was stopped during the pandemic. Although the second dome was lifted 18 months after the first, Unit 2 is further ahead thanks to offsite manufacturing and lessons learnt from the construction of the first unit.
Hinkley Point C is a two-unit, 3,200MWe EPR nuclear power station in Somerset. It is being built by the Bouygues and Laing O’Rourke joint venture (Bylor JV) for client EDF Energy.
Work is expected to be completed between 2029 and 2031.
