The University College of Estate Management (UCEM) has been rebranded as the University of the Built Environment (UBE), following consultation with students, staff, alumni, and industry partners.
According to the university, the rebrand reflects its commitment to meeting the UK’s long-term built environment skills needs. It is estimated that more than 250,000 extra construction workers will be needed by 2028 to meet demand.
Commenting on the announcement, Ashley Wheaton, vice chancellor at UBE, said the institution will play a key role in helping to overcome the challenges the industry is facing across housing, sustainability, core infrastructure, safety, and net zero.
“For over a century, we’ve evolved alongside and with the industry, this new name better represents our role in preparing all professionals, right across the built environment,” she added.
The university’s rebrand follows a strategic merger with the London School of Architecture in May. This new academic model aims to support key national objectives, including housing delivery, infrastructure modernisation, environmental resilience, and regional skills development.
Wheaton said: “As we continue to grow, our new university identity strengthens our role as a trusted partner to the industry, one that develops much needed talent, drives innovation, and supports long-term progress across the built environment.”
