Trimble adds new 3D model viewer to Viewpoint Field View

Trimble has launched the latest updates for Viewpoint Field View, including a 3D model viewer.

The new 3D model viewer feature is embedded into Viewpoint Field View, providing users with “a true model-based workflow, both in the office and out in the field”, Trimble said.

Using the mobile app, teams can open and view the 3D model on site, giving site staff immediate visual context and insight. Tasks and forms (whether for snagging, health and safety actions, quality checks, inspections or handover) can be embedded, pinned and assigned to the relevant location within the model. As well as enhancing documentation accuracy, this can provide a clear visual context for reporting, Trimble said.

Any task or form pinned to a 3D model will automatically be reflected on the linked 2D plan. This creates a single source of truth across project views and gives users the freedom to work in either 2D or 3D, depending on their preferences.

Productivity gains

Trimble highlighted improved efficiency levels and productivity gains from the updates: “A great example of this is the auto-calibration of BIM files and geometry setup, particularly relevant during the initial project setup stage. While previous workflows could have taken teams days or even weeks to complete, depending on the size and scale of the project, now it can take just minutes or hours.

“The software’s intelligent capabilities mean Field View can semi-automate the identification of spaces from within an IFC file, creating a 2D plan from a 3D model while suggesting appropriate labels – such as Room One or Corridor Ten.

“Through the automation of this time-consuming and manual task of space identification, project leaders can instead focus time on calibration and correct labelling of spaces. This can provide significant time savings and accelerate project progression by transforming a lengthy setup task into a swift operation, minimising manual work and the potential for error.”

Mark Slack, product manager EMEA at Trimble, added: “With Field View, the emphasis is on providing complete site and project management for all contractors with 2D, 3D and reality-based workflows, helping to facilitate the golden thread and master compliance with new regulatory frameworks, such as the Building Safety Act.”

The latest update also includes a new organisation import tool, helping teams to set up organisations on new and existing projects, with quick bulk uploads, duplicate control and enterprise library support.

Trimble has also announced new functionality and integrations for its Tekla PowerFab structural steel fabrication management software.
