Sisk civil engineering arm Farrans has begun work on a battery energy storage scheme in the West Midlands for client BW ESS.
Early works have started on the Berkswell battery energy storage system project near Solihull which, once operational, will have capacity to power more than 500,000 homes for four hours.
Farrans said battery storage can play an important role in supporting a more flexible and reliable electricity system by responding quickly to changes in supply and demand and to help balance the grid. The scheme will also strengthen energy resilience in a region close to major electricity demand centres.
Farrans project manager Barry McDonagh said: “This is an exciting project to be involved in as the UK adopts more resilient and sustainable approaches to manage its energy network.”
