Shaylor Group’s fall into administration has delayed the opening of the Silverstone Experience, a motor racing museum that the contractor was on the point of completing before it collapsed, by months.
Shaylor Group ceased trading on 14 June with the loss of around 200 jobs and administrator FRP Advisory was appointed this week to handle its affairs.
One of the contractor’s most prominent existing contracts was the construction of the £19.3m Silverstone Experience, involving the construction of a new visitor centre to bring to life the history of Silverstone and British motorsport.
The Northampton venue received National Lottery funds to convert a former World War II hangar at Silverstone into a museum.
It had been due to open to the public on 9 July with a preview weekend on 6 and 7 July.
But in a statement, the operators of the Silverstone Experience said: “We are very disappointed to have to announce that Shaylor Group, the main building contractor for The Silverstone Experience, announced on 14 June that it had gone into administration. The Silverstone Experience project will still go ahead but this development will inevitably cause some delay to the public opening date, previously planned for 9 July and the preview weekend planned for 6 and 7 July.
“Due to the complex logistical and legal challenges caused by Shaylor Group going into administration, it is unlikely that we will be able to open before 1 September.”
A new opening date is set to be announced shortly.
