Contractors Seddon and Kier are among the top 100 employers for apprentices in 2022, along with several major housebuilders, according to a new list.

The Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers 2022 list is compiled by the Department for Education, in partnership with High Fliers Research.

To feature on the list, companies must have a minimum of 250 employees and 25 apprentices.

Each provides four pieces of data:

  • the total number of apprentices it employed in March 2022;
  • the number of apprentices that started an apprenticeship with the employer from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022;
  • the diversity of the new apprentices;
  • the number that successfully completed their apprenticeships and went on to further employment with the employer.

The number of apprentices employed and the new apprenticeship starts were weighted according to the size of the employers’ workforce.

The British Army, Royal Navy and BT took the top three slots.

Top among 10 construction businesses to feature was Clarkson Evans, the electrical contractor for new-build homes, which took sixth place.

Seddon Construction was 56th, with apprentices making up 11.5% of its employees and 23 new apprentice entrants in 2021-22.

Other construction companies to feature were:

  • Horbury Group (68th)
  • Kier Group (72nd)
  • Barratt Developments (76th)
  • Persimmon Homes (77th)
  • Bagnalls (78th)
  • Fortem (86th)
  • EE Smith Contracts (89th)
  • Bellway (98th)
