These are the latest images from Aecom for its preliminary designs of key venues for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
In addition to masterplanning the main Olympic Park, Aecom is developing designs on seven of the park venues, as well as designing the park’s infrastructure and landscaping. The scope of venue work includes engineering and architecture, led by Aecom’s specialist sports architecture team.
Aecom won Brazil’s first international architecture competition in 2011 to design the masterplan Rio’s 2016 Olympic Park, making it the first company to design the parks for two consecutive Olympic and Paralympic Games Parks – London 2012 and Rio 2016.
Aecom’s masterplan takes its inspiration from the dramatic natural setting of Rio de Janeiro. Located on a former Formula 1 race track in Barra da Tijuca, the main Olympic park sits on a triangular space with water on either side. During Games time, at the southern peninsula of the site there will be an entertainment area for around 12,000 people to watch the events on big screens.
The vision for the future is not just to create a global stage for the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2016, but also to create a new legacy district with new homes, jobs and places for leisure activities with a new central park and a thriving waterfront. It is also set to become a global centre of sporting excellence, with a Legacy Olympic Training Centre utilising the Games’ permanent sporting venues.
The 15 venues on the park will be interconnected by flowing pathways, intended to mimic the great Amazon River. The Aecom-designed broadcast centre will host 20,000 journalists from around the world, and the Olympic villages will be located nearby.
Architects say the construction of the Rio Olympic Park is set to be much more straightforward than the 2012 Games, as several venues are already operating.
The main Olympic stadium is not at the park – athletes will use the famous national football stadium, the Maracana, which will also be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the Joco Havelange Stadium – home to the club side Botafogo.
