The construction managers who delivered the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre and Block 7 in the Athletes’ Village are among the 110 outstanding professionals shortlisted for this year’s Construction Manager of the Year Award.
Michael Breton of Sir Robert McAlpine, Stuart Fraser of Balfour Beatty and John Mudge of Lend Lease will compete against the best of the industry for gold and silver medals in 11 categories.
The medal winners and the individual honoured as the overall Construction Manager of the Year will be announced at an awards evening on 1 November 1 at London’s Grosvenor Hotel.
The field also includes nine project managers each from Kier, Wates and Lend Lease, and nine from contractors that have never previously entered the competition.
The shortlist also includes the first woman to reach the final since 2009, with Kier’s Elizabeth McCartney shortlisted in the New Build and Refurbishment under £3m category. In 2009, Gemma Sapiano of Willmott Dixon won a gold award and Sarah Payne from BAM won a silver medal in 2008. But the shortlists for 2010 and 2011 were men-only.

Contractors that have secured their first places on the shortlist this year include Vinci, recently confirmed as Europe’s largest contractor, and Baxall Construction, a regional Chartered Building Company from Kent. McAleer & Rushe of Northern Ireland, Sunderland’s Gentoo, fit-out contractor Simpson (York) and Scottish housebuilder CCG are also represented for the first time.
Other contractors with a high representation in the awards include Willmott Dixon with seven shortlisted entrants, and Sir Robert McAlpine with six.
Bouygues has scored its first ever shortlist success, but its subsidiaries Leadbitter and Denne have together secured seven places on the shortlist.
According to CMYA project manager Adam Hollis, the number of entries to the awards has been consistent for the past three years, despite the reduced volume of workload in that period.
“Entry levels are holding up – we had a record year in 2009, and this year we were only 5% down. Since the recession, the CMYA awards have perhaps been even more important to contractors and individuals,” he commented.
Every individual nominated for the awards was interviewed by the judges in person – apart from Andrew Hill of Lend Lease, shortlisted for Birmingham’s Ormiston Academy, who had taken up a new role in Moscow and was interviewed via Skype.
