CIOB chief executive Chris Blythe (pictured above) and CIOB trustee Mike Foy were among those in the construction industry recognised in the Queen’s 2017 New Year’s Honours.
Blythe received an OBE for “services to the construction industry and the government” while CIOB Trustee Mike Foy FCIOB, who chairs numerous CIOB boards and committees, also received an OBE for “services to education”.
Blythe has been chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Building since January 2000. A management accountant by training, he has been involved in vocational education and training, together with business development for the past 21 years.
Foy has 40 years’ experience in the industry on both client and supply side, where he has been involved with contractors having local, national and international experience.
The honours list provided slim pickings for built environment professionals generally. Others honoured were:
- Architect David Adjaye, who is also set to become Sir David Adjaye after receiving a knighthood for services to architecture. The architect, who heads up firm Adjaye Associates, is famed for projects including the Dirty House and Stephen Lawrence Centre and has been described by the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood as “one of the leading architects of his generation and a global cultural ambassador for the UK”.
- Anthony Wilson, director of sustainability and building at Aecom, was made an MBE for services to engineering while Chris Newsome, director of asset management at Anglian Water, was honoured with an OBE for for services to civil engineering and carbon reduction.
- Ricky Burdett, professor of architecture and urban studies at the London School of Economics, received a CBE for services to urban planning and design.
- FM Conway chief executive Mike Conway also picked up an MBE for services to UK construction, infrastructure support and road safety.
