Teams made up of the UK’s leading architects, consultants and engineers are competing in an international 48-hour virtual BIM design contest that begins today.
Organised by collaborative platform Asite, Build Earth Live New York, will involve six teams competing to create a construction package incorporating design, cost and scheduling information for a community centre in New York.

The site the teams will be tackling is the Hudson Yards community outreach sports facility & residential tower in Midtown West, Manhattan. The brief challenges participants to take advantage of the riverfront position and all of the nearby transport links to create a vision for sports-based community outreach which become a draw for the entire region.
British companies are well represented in the contest with a group of BIM specialised SMEs forming the BIM4SME Giants. Their team comprises BWB Consulting, Elliott Wood Structural Engineers, Geraghty Taylor Architects, Kent County Council, Nunelah Design Consultants, RG Group, Riley Consulting, TP Professional Services, the University of Westminster and ACO Technologies.
They will be competing against a team led by Ryder Architecture that includes the BIM Academy, Willmott Dixon Construction, i2C, Ravetllat Ribas, Cundall, SLR Global Consulting and Summers Inman.
Clerkenwell-based global project management and technical consultancy WYG, with support from students at the Well Acre Academy in Manchester make up the third UK-based team.
The remaining teams are BIM Unlimited, led by Dominican Republic-based architect Modo Forma, and ElSarhaBIM, a BIM consultancy based in Egypt.
The teams will compete for awards in five different categories: the overall Build Live Award; Best use of BIM for Design for Community Outreach; Best use of BIM for Sustainability and Constructability; Best Multi-disciplinary BIM & use of Interoperability; and the Judges Discretionary Awards.
Judging the contest are the BIM Task Group’s David Philp, Richard Garber, director of NJIT’s School of Architecture, George Mokhtar associate director at Turner & Townsend and Nathan Doughtychief, operations officer at Asite.
The awards will be announced at a ceremony on Friday 25 September.
