The refurbishment of Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in south London is on track after receiving planning approval this week.

Morgan Sindall is due to start work on the scheme later this year, which will modernise the Grade II*-listed sports centre, originally opened in 1964.

Work on the sports centre part of the scheme, designed by architect FaulknerBrowns, will include an enlarged gym, a reconfigured swimming pool, new sports facilities and wider improvements to the whole site. London mayor Sadiq Khan is seeking funding for revamping the stadium.

98% carbon reduction target

The scheme is targeting a 98% reduction in carbon emissions through upgrades to the existing building fabric to improve energy efficiency, adding PV panels to the centre’s roof and the use of air-source heat pumps for heating and cooling.

The project team includes sports masterplan specialist WOO architects, engineers Max Fordham and Alan Baxter Associates, and employer’s agent and commercial adviser Currie & Brown. The project team for the scheme was procured using the Southern Construction Framework.

Richard Dobson, Morgan Sindall London area director, said: “We can’t wait to start delivering the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre renovation now that planning has been approved, as we know this project is going to unlock incredible benefits for so many people in the south London area.”

The wider complex was designed in the 1950s by London County Council architect Norman Engleback and built close to the site of where the Crystal Palace burned down in 1936.
