Morgan Sindall has won a contract to build a new modular primary school in Derby in just nine months using a ‘Lego’ build system.
Hackwood Primary will be built using the Sunesis Mosaic model developed in joint venture between Willmott Dixon and public sector procurement body Scape.
The system uses a portfolio of 77 offsite-manufactured components which link together to allow various different designs.
The £5m flagship project is the largest to be delivered through the Scape Venture framework. The school will be fabricated in Hull before being delivered to site.
Derby City Council has commissioned the new 14,000 square foot school in collaboration with residential developers Redrow Homes East Midlands and Miller Homes, which are funding the project as part of their plans to build more than 700 new homes on the neighbouring Hackwood Farm estate.
The modular single-storey school, designed by Lungfish Architects, will house six classrooms and a 26-place nursery. The expandable layout will allow additional teaching space to be added in the future, taking the total capacity from 200 up to 315.
Work is scheduled to start in January and the project is expected to complete in time for the new academic year in September 2019.
Rob Cant, framework director at Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure in the Midlands, said: “Innovative framework procurement options offer long-term social value for councils and the communities they serve. We are pleased to be delivering the new, first class education facilities at Hackwood Primary School as part of Scape’s Venture framework.”
Mike Salter, group development director at Scape Venture added: “Hackwood Primary School is a perfect example of how the private and public sector can work together through the Scape Venture framework to deliver a new community facility in the most efficient way. It’s an innovative and exciting collaboration with Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure, Lungfish and Sunesis working together utilising our Mosaic offsite product to ensure the school is delivered quickly with minimal impact on the environment.”
