Building of a new product and residue store retreatment plant at Sellafield – one of the largest-ever construction projects at the nuclear facility – is to gather pace after the business case for it was approved.
The green light from the government means that Sellafield Ltd can now move ahead with the project.
It will be delivered by Sellafield Ltd’s Programme and Project Partners (PPP), a joint venture between Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR), Jacobs, and Doosan Babcock.
Morgan Sindall Infrastructure’s role is to deliver the civils construction management elements of the programme.
Once complete, the building will treat and store historic nuclear waste.
Steve Harnwell, head of the project for Sellafield Ltd, said: “This is a major step forward for the project. It allows us to give certainty to our partners and be able to start making the large commitments for construction and manufacture required to progress and deliver this mission-critical project within the wider UK supply chain.
“The partnering approach to project delivery has provided confidence to the government that our cost and schedule predictions are realistic.”
Construction of the plant began in earnest in February 2020 with the laying of its base slab via 18 separate concrete pours, but was suspended during the first coronavirus lockdown before resuming in May 2020.
