Sir Robert McAlpine has recruited Paul Hamer, chief executive of consulting engineer WYG, as its new chief executive.
Hamer begins his new role on 31 July and joins the firm after having been at WYG since 2008. He was appointed chief executive of the engineering firm in 2009 and is credited with turning its fortunes around and bringing it back to profit through restructuring.
Prior to WYG, Hamer was managing director of VT Nuclear Services and also held a number of senior executive positions in the oil, chemical and petrochemical sectors.

He takes over at McAlpine from Tony Aikenhead, who left in July 2016 after just eight months in the post.
In April Sir Robert McAlpine revealed that it had suffered a pretax loss of £43m due to an exceptional writedown on its pension scheme.
Gavin McAlpine, non-executive chairman, said: “I am delighted to welcome Paul to Sir Robert McAlpine. He has an outstanding reputation within the industry and a proven track record for delivery, both as a client and as a contractor.
“At WYG Paul refocused the business around driving value for its clients. At Sir Robert McAlpine, we are focused on our clients’ needs and delivering exceptional value. I am certain that Paul will challenge us all to excel in supporting these objectives.
“We are looking forward to working in partnership with Paul for the next phase of Sir Robert McAlpine’s evolution.”
Speaking about his appointment, Hamer said: “I am looking forward to working with the McAlpine family, the board and my new colleagues to create and drive future success for Sir Robert McAlpine.
“We will be building on the key strength of engineering excellence whilst leveraging the tradition and heritage of this great company.”
