Mace returns to refurbish former London City Hall after two decades

Mace this month returned to start the refurbishment of a landmark scheme – the former City Hall in London – that it originally oversaw more than two decades ago.
The firm is managing the £150m transformation of the former Greater London Authority headquarters at More London into a modern, sustainable office and retail scheme for Kuwaiti-owned real estate investor St Martins Property Investments. Mace delivered the More London development in July 2002
The retrofit project will increase the building’s floorspace from 18,000 sq m to 22,000 sq m through extensions around the 10-storey structure. The scheme is designed by Gensler, with the project team including services, M&E and structural engineer Waterman.

Mace said the scheme will retain the building’s fundamental character, with its circular footprint and curved silhouette remaining. At the same time, the project will reimagine it as “an open, mixed-use accommodation that offers a destination for both locals and visitors to London Bridge’s Queen’s Walk”.

The refurbishment will include full replacement of the cladding and glazing, new terraces, enhancements to the roofscape, and infilling of the atrium. The building will include new MEP systems and modern end-of-trip facilities. Public realm improvements will enhance The Scoop amphitheatre, surrounding green space, and the southern bank of the river.
