Prime minister Boris Johnson has appointed Lord Callanan as construction minister, following Lee Rowley’s resignation.
Former construction minister Rowley resigned last week, amid pressure on Johnson to announce his own departure.
Callanan has been a parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy since February 2020.
Prior to that, he was minister of state at the Department for Exiting the European Union from October 2017.
He holds a degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Newcastle Polytechnic. Prior to his career in politics, he worked as a project engineer at Scottish & Newcastle breweries from 1986 to 1998.
Construction is one of 26 areas of ministerial responsibility he has in his expanded portfolio. Others include: smart meters and smart systems, energy efficiency, fuel poverty, supply chains and clean heat.
