Laing O’Rourke has become the first UK construction group to achieve a quality management systems standard across all its UK businesses, the British Standards Institution (BSI) said.
BS 99001 is a sector-specific standard developed by BSI based on the international standard for quality management systems, ISO 9001.
Published in 2022, it requires companies to integrate quality management into their project-based work, focusing on design quality, temporary works and sustainability throughout the project lifecycle.
It also requires businesses to consider social, economic and sustainability factors, including progress towards net-zero emissions.
BSI said the management system is subject to an extensive and continuing independent assurance process to support the certification.
VolkerStevin and VolkerFitzpatrick became the first two individual companies to achieve the standard in 2023.
‘Laser focus on the highest standards’
Laing O’Rourke’s certified companies include Laing O’Rourke, Laing O’Rourke Delivery, Explore 2050 Engineering (Crown House Technologies), Explore 2050 Manufacturing (Vetter, Expanded Piling, Enterprise Solutions, CEMC) and Select Plant Hire Company.
Peter Lyons, Laing O’Rourke’s managing director for Europe, said: “We are pioneering modern methods of construction with a laser focus on the highest standards of quality and building safety for our clients and our people.
“To be the first group in the UK to achieve this certification is a testament to the dedication of our teams to injecting quality into every step of the construction process. I am proud that Laing O’Rourke is again leading the way for the industry.”
Matt Page, senior vice-president of assurance services EMEA at BSI, said: “This milestone highlights a growing emphasis on leadership and robust quality processes throughout the project lifecycle.
“Laing O’Rourke’s comprehensive certification represents a major step forward for the industry and sets a new benchmark for tier one contractors.”
