Interserve has been selected to convert the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre (NEC) into a Nightingale coronavirus hospital, similar to the one being created at London’s ExCeL.
The hospital at the NEC will start with up to 500 beds and will have capacity to increase to 2,000 beds if needed. The hospital will support patients from across the Midlands.
The new hospitals will draw from predominantly NHS doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals from across the country. A number of military medics will be on hand to care for patients too.
The value of Interserve’s contract for the work has not yet been revealed. The firm’s former CEO Debbie White was reported last week by Sky News to have volunteered to oversee the creation of covid-19 testing centres around the UK.
