Design and procurement continues apace at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant, despite no final decision as to whether the plant will go ahead.
A £100m contract has been awarded at Welsh firm Express Reinforcements to supply 200,000 tonnes of steel to the nuclear project.
The firm, based in Neath, south Wales, will provide steel manufactured at CELSA Steel in Cardiff. It was given preferred bidder status for the contract by tier one contractor Bylor, a joint venture between Bouygues Travaux Publics and Laing O’Rourke.
Bylor project director Martin Westbury said the deal supported the JV’s strategy of “working with the UK supply chain wherever possible, using UK-sourced materials”.
“Bylor is currently working closely with EDF Energy to prepare the site at Hinkley Point C for the main construction programme, so that when full governmental approval is received, work can commence in earnest without delay,” he added.
Bylor will provide the civil engineering works package for the £18bn scheme.
Other contractors working on the project include a Kier/Bam Nuttall JV, which is undertaking the enabling works, and a Balfour Beatty/NG Bailey JV, which will provide M&E works.
This project is a disgrace and should be banned in total
