Over a hundred managers from the services and facilities management group EMCOR are to be drilled in the sort of leadership skills that have provided the back bone for the British army, as they are sent for training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst (RMAS), in Surrey.
During the two day programme course, so called First Line managers will be taught “through experience “within the 2,600 acre training facility of the Academy, and involves working outdoors over rough terrain, taking participants out of their comfort zone, yet still requiring thinking on the spot. The four precepts of the course are “Plan, Brief, Delegate and Motivate” and are taught with a distinctly dynamic and practical method. Specially designed leadership tasks, set within a given scenario, are used to enhance these skills with each delegate being given the opportunity to lead a group.
Greg Ingleton, HR Director at EMCOR Group (UK), comments: “With cadets sent from all over the world to train at RMAS, such is the reputation of its leadership training that there is no better place for EMCOR’s First Line Managers to hone their leadership skills. Following the two-day module, conducted at RMAS, we believe our delegates will have learnt valuable leadership lessons and will be able to put their knowledge straight into practice as stand-out employees in the business. In total, 120 of EMCOR’s first line management will attend this programme in 2012, with the intention of having all first line managers complete the programme by mid-2014.”
Mel Milazzo, EMCOR UK Training and Development Manager, was instrumental in this marked departure from traditional training, which tends to be classroom based.
Bruce Jacobs, Building Service Supervisor of EMCOR Group (UK)’s British Airways Contract, one of the First Line Managers to take part in the course said: “The course is challenging, but its delivery is refreshing and engaging. The prestigious location is incredibly inspiring; it will be great to be able to say I have been trained at one of the best leadership academies in the world and have benefitted from the expertise of the officers there. By leading one of the tasks, I learnt the value of clear planning and briefing, and the importance of delegation and motivation in order to get a job done. I am looking forward to putting the additional leadership skills I have learnt into practice.”
