The Construction Innovation Hub and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) have formed a partnership to drive the development of policy on construction and help deliver the government’s focus on platform design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA).
Visitors to the recent London Build 2021 event got their first look at the work of the Hub and CIOB, which focuses on designing integrated, manufactured components and sub-assemblies that will adhere to new interface standards.
There was also a demonstration of how the creation of a rulebook will support wider adoption, and delivery of multiple building types through the creation of a standard kit of parts which can be deployed across multiple business types, the development of further platforms and the testing and development of new manufacturing approaches based upon a digitised workflow
Professor (Honourary) Dave Philp, impact director at the Hub, said: “The built environment touches all aspects of our daily lives, so a modern, digital, secure built environment model is of critical importance to achieving climate resilience.
“As we see in the Glasgow Action Plan that was agreed at COP26, delivering more sustainable, environmentally friendly solutions to the increasingly complex challenges we face is a pressing priority for us all, and we at the Hub are proud to be working with CIOB to help deliver these solutions today.”
Eddie Tuttle, director of policy, research and public affairs at the CIOB, added: “CIOB welcomes the digital transformation work the Hub is driving forward, and we will continue to work with them to ensure that industries aspirations are developed into industry-leading policy change.”

DfMA but it’s nature will change competence demand requirements and provide the opportunity to be more explicit in terms of competence requirements linked to products to systems and offers the ability for traditional skilled workers to amplify their contributions and increase productivity. This people dimension of DfMA must not be missed and we need to be more intelligent in how we analyze this.
