The number of people employed in the construction industry has stayed flat at around 1.36m – the same level as two years ago.
Official numbers released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) yesterday for April to June 2018 showed that while unemployment was at its lowest since 1975 across the whole economy, the number of people directly employed in construction has broadly flatlined.
The most recent count of people employed in the sector was slightly down on the previous quarter (January to March 2018) when it stood at 1.38m.
The total number of men employed in the sector in April to June 2018 was around 1.12m, compared to just 245,000 women.
After declining after the 2008 recession, the number of people employed in the sector rose steadily between 2012 and 2016. The total stood at 1.26m in January to March 2012, before hitting 1.36m in July to September 2016.
Separately, the most recent figures (April to June 2018) showed that there were 958,000 self-employed people in construction, up slightly from the 934,000 self-employed people in the sector in January to March 2018.
