Sun safety is “not optional”, said Brian Berry, chief executive of the Federation of Master Builders (image: Douglas Hudson | Dreamstime.com)

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is encouraging construction workers to prepare for warmer weather as temperatures are set to reach nearly 30°C in parts of the UK.

Construction workers face a higher risk of sunburn, heat-related illness, and skin cancer due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), everyone working outside is at risk, with those who have fair skin, red hair, or many moles especially vulnerable.

To keep workers safe, the FMB has shared some sun protection measures:

  • Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and trousers.
  • Use high SPF sunscreen whenever outside.
  • Wear sunglasses or safety goggles with 100% UV protection.
  • Erect shaded areas for breaks.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Schedule outside work for before 10am and after 3pm to avoid peak sun.
  • Implement a sun safety policy, including training and provision of sun protection equipment.
  • Regularly check your skin for changes to moles or other abnormalities.

Commenting on the measures, Brian Berry, chief executive of the FMB, said it is vital that everyone on site takes sun protection seriously.

He added that it is “not just for comfort, but to safeguard the long-term health of our workforce”.

“Sun safety isn’t optional – it’s essential for every tradesperson.”
