CIOB chief executive Chris Blythe has described the creation of the Chartered Construction Manager designation as “probably the best thing the institute has done for the industry”.
In the video below, Blythe discusses the impact of the new description with CIOB president Peter Jacobs, describing how the groundwork for the new option began with an initiative four years ago by former presidents John Bale and Li Shirong to define construction management.
After four years of work, he says, “we’ve established construction management as a distinctive profession, as opposed to a construction technique or a process”.
As Blythe points out, CIOB members now “own the right” to the title around the world, adding that it is likely to be popular outside the UK where the term “chartered builder” isn’t widely known.
“The CIOB owns it, therefore our members own it – that’s priceless,” said Blythe.
Blythe also says that the new description has sparked the interest of built environment professionals who aren’t currently members of the CIOB, but might now be interested in applying to join.
And he also believes it has given the institute an added appeal to students and young people, who can now more easily equate the title “Chartered Construction Manager” to “Chartered Accountant” or “Chartered Engineer”.
To date, around 5,000 individuals have contacted the CIOB to say that they would be interested in using the new designation.
