Paul Griffiths, senior project manager at AtkinsRéalis, chair of the Build Torbay Operational Group and CIOB Tomorrow’s Leaders representative for the Exeter Hub, has helped develop a new initiative in Torbay, Devon.
The Foundations for Work: Industry Skills Experience pilot aims to promote careers in construction and create pathways into employment, training and apprenticeships. It was developed by the Build Torbay Operational Group, chaired by Griffiths, in partnership with South Devon College, Jobcentre Plus, Eat That Frog, Build Torbay partner organisations and local employers.
The programme is designed to address construction skills shortages while creating new routes into employment, training and apprenticeships.
Build Torbay is a Torbay Council-funded initiative that brings together construction employers, education providers and industry partners to inspire future talent, support local business growth and maximise the social value created through the area’s regeneration programme.
The three-day programme engaged 12 participants through practical trade experiences, employer engagement activities, site visits and tailored progression support. Participants gained first-hand insight into construction careers, developed an understanding of workplace expectations and explored the wide range of opportunities available across the industry.
The pilot aimed to support Torbay residents facing barriers to employment while helping the construction sector attract, develop and retain its future workforce.
Following the success of the pilot, further programmes are being developed to support more Torbay residents into employment, training and apprenticeship opportunities within the sector.
