The former Second World War flak bunker in Wilhelmsburg has been refurbished to provide a symbol and source of renewable energy as part of the Internationale Bauausstellung (IBA) exhibition in Hamburg. The structure has been equipped with a biomass combined heat and power plant; a water tank and a solar power system to generate hot water and thermal heat for 1,000 dwellings. The IBA, which opened on 23 March, is an exhibition of new concepts in sustainable buildings, including the first algae-powered office. The exhibition runs until November.
