The BIM Task Group has established a key piece of its “legacy” with the signing of a CIOB-backed charter designed to build a stronger working alliance between the various BIM 4 working groups.
There are over a dozen BIM4 interest groups working to smooth the BIM process in their specialist areas and promote the uptake of BIM, including BIM4Regs, BIM4Fit-out and newly-formed BIM4Housing.
At a signing ceremony held at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills yesterday, the Task Group’s head of BIM David Philp said the charter helped underline that everyone involved in the BIM 4 groups was “focussed on the goal of BIM adoption – we’re at the tipping point, but we’ve got a long way to go”.

He added: “It’s about sharing best practice for the greater good of all and the greater good of the industry. As we go beyond 2016, it’s so important that these groups keep together and give leadership to those that are well on their way to BIM implementation.”
The CIOB has been acting as a secretariat to the BIM 4 groups on behalf of the BIM Task Group, and co-ordinated work on the new charter. Many of the groups, which also include BIM4FM, BIM4SMEs and BIM4Retail, have little or no funding to draw on.
The CIOB’s head of policy Eddie Tuttle commented: “It underpins an ethos for all the BIM 4 groups, as a very important conduit for Level 2 BIM and its legacy in the future.”
Tim Platts, chair of BIM4SMEs, said: “It shows strong support for sharing and exchanging information for the benefit of everyone trying to meet the requirements of 2016.” One example could be more widespread dissemination of BIM4SMEs popular “hints and tips” publication across the industry.
The charter commits the groups to work together, share resources and information. Its clauses include undertakings to:
- focus on the goal of promoting BIM adoption and providing support on an industry-wide basis with no single bias to any one platform, group or company;
- be mutually supportive and collaborative, sharing best practice to the benefit of the greater good;
- be the forum for all specialist interest groups aiming to co-ordinate BIM activities and a practical conduit that is both knowledge based and current.
