Guitar playing ground engineers to singing site supervisers will get their moment of fame in October at a construction industry battle of the bands event.
Entries are open for the annual Construction Rocks competition on 18 October, which raises money for charity.
So far bands confirmed to compete include: Roadshack from BNPPRE, Mason Philips and Quartz; Rolfe Judd and the Lost Profits from architect Rolfe Judd; ToneWood from contractor StructureTone and cross-laminated timber supplier KLH UK; Wild S*? Party from WSP; Zero Charm from Mansell and Balfour Beatty; and Work in Progress from Robin Partington Architects.
The event, at the Camden Centre in London, will raise money for property industry charity LandAid, which provides grants and help with property matters to charities working with disadvantaged young people. The organisers aim to raise £15,000 this year in addition to the £40,000 the event has raised since it began in 2008. The organisers are looking for entries and for sponsors for the event.
The winner of the competition will get a day at the State of the Ark recording studio in Richmond, owned by singer-songwriter Terry Britten who has written for Tina Turner and Sir Cliff Richard.
Bill Price, director at WSP came up with the idea for Construction Rocks with Nigel Fraser, formerly of BAA and now at West One Management Consulting. Price said: “Construction Rocks is a unique event that gets the whole industry engaged for a great cause every year. Whether it’s as competitors, fundraisers or audience members, everyone has a good time. This year we’re aiming higher than ever before and we’ve no doubt we can do it.”
Joanna Averley, chief executive of LandAid, said: “It’s great to see the property and construction industry coming together to raise money for disadvantaged young people through LandAid and I’m certainly looking forward to seeing all the talent on show.”
Last year’s winners were The Instigators from HLM Architects, Scott Brownrigg and Synergy, which took the best overall band prize, BAA’s the BAAnd, which were the best fundraisers, and Grimshaw Architects’ band The Fountainheads, which won best new band.
Den Farnworth of The Fountainheads said: “If you’re sitting on the fence wondering whether to get involved, I’d thoroughly recommend jumping in with both feet – Construction Rocks is hands down the best night out in the construction industry.”
