Chief executive David Barwell is stepping down, as Aecom cuts up to 500 jobs in the UK and Ireland

Aecom is to make up to 500 redundancies in its UK and Ireland business as it suffers the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown.

The move means that Aecom could cut up to 7% of its 7,000-strong workforce in the UK and Ireland.

The news came just days after it was announced that chief executive David Barwell is stepping down to be replaced by Colin Wood. Chief operating officer Bill Quarterman is also to depart the firm, although Aecom said the changes at board level were not related to the pandemic.

In a statement regarding the job losses, an Aecom spokesperson said: “Over the last months, the global pandemic has heavily impacted many of our clients and competitors, the industries in which we work, and our UK and Ireland business.

“As a result of this we have taken the difficult decision to re-shape our business to better meet the demands of our markets, and help us continue to provide the best services for our clients. In support of this restructuring we are beginning a consultation process across the region which may impact up to 500 roles.”
