A2 Engine tool to speed up early planning around ground movement

A digital platform called Gemma has been launched to help engineers assess ground movements during early project planning.

The platform, developed by A2 Engine, is aimed at projects with basements, retaining walls and deep excavations. It will provide early indication of any impact on neighbouring structures and highlight where more detailed investigation may be needed.

A digital interface allows users to define excavation geometry, adjust key design parameters and compare alternative scenarios.

Gemma has been developed to meet demand for faster feasibility studies and the ability to consider multiple design options, programme constraints and risks early on. Developers said it does not replace detailed numerical modelling or engineering judgement.

The platform is available as a free beta release, and A2 Engine is looking for feedback from users to help shape Gemma’s future development.

Domenico Lombardi, director at A2 Engine, said: “Engineers can spend considerable time repeating preliminary assessments before a preferred solution is established. Gemma has been developed to streamline that process, allowing engineers to obtain an initial understanding of potential ground movements almost instantly while retaining detailed analysis for the later stages of design.”

He added: “Digital tools should enhance engineering, not replace it. By reducing the time spent on routine preliminary assessments, engineers can focus their expertise where it delivers the greatest value – interpreting results, managing risk and developing the most effective solutions for each project.”
