Institute highlights benefits of membership as renewal date nears.
Members will be receiving their renewal notice for CIOB subscription for 2016, following a year when the CIOB has been at the centre of the debate in key topics facing the industry and sought to raise overall professional standards by implementing a grade review.
The initiatives of the past 12 months demonstrate that the CIOB is on the road to implementing its five-year corporate plan, which sets a target of raising the institute’s profile among employers and stakeholders, demonstrating a commitment to everyone who works in the industry, and continuing to grow the membership of the institute.
The past year has several high-profile projects for the CIOB, including:
- Extending the institute’s reach internationally, via an innovative partnership with the New York City Department of Design and Construction. The link-up aims to encourage wider take-up of MCIOB membership in New York and the north American construction sector.
- In July, the CIOB published Modern Slavery: The Dark Side of Construction, an examination of exploitative labour relationships in the industry both in the UK and the rest of the world. The report urged more focus on the issue from government, industry and NGOs.
- In September, the CIOB published Understanding the Value of Professionals and Professional Bodies aimed at measuring the “added value” that professionals and professional bodies such as the CIOB bring to the economy, and to formulating policy initiatives.
- In October, the CIOB unveiled the revised and more robust standards, as well as updated branding, for the Chartered Construction Company and Chartered Construction Consultant scheme. The relaunch is targeting a boost in membership of at least 10%.
- On 1 July, the CIOB implemented changes to its grade structure, smoothing the path of new and existing non-corporate members towards full MCIOB status and closing the ACIOB and ICIOB grades to new members. Anyone joining the CIOB will be known as a Student or Applicant, indicating that they are working towards chartered membership (MCIOB or FCIOB).
As a result of the grade review, there has also been a change to the subscription renewal system compared to previous years. If a member – or their employer – fails to pay by the renewal date of 1 January 2016 then membership could lapse. The member would have to re-qualify under the new grade structure.
