The Frederick Gibberd school, built by Caledonian Modular
Ten contractors have won a place on a £3bn government framework to build free schools using modern methods of construction.
The framework is split into two lots worth £2bn and £1bn apiece. The first lot is intended for larger projects with floor areas exceeding 6,000m2 and will be used mainly for the delivery of offsite-built secondary schools and blocks, as well as primary schools of all sizes.
Meanwhile, lot 2 will be used to deliver projects with floor areas of under 6,000m2 and is intended to be used for offsite-built primary school schemes and secondary blocks.
The new framework will be also made available to local authorities and academy trusts to use.
The contractors who made the cut were:
Lot 1:
- Bowmer & Kirkland
- Caledonian Modular
- Elliott Group
- Laing O’Rourke Construction
- Wates Construction
Lot 2:
- Eco Modular Building
- Net Zero Buildings
- Portakabin
- Reds10 UK
- Spatial Initiative
A Department for Education spokesperson said: “We have notified the successful contractors that will deliver projects for free schools, as part of the department’s new construction framework, Modern Methods of Construction.
“The new framework is the next step in the evolution of offsite construction of school buildings and will utilise the next generation of standardised school design, building on earlier approaches to offsite construction to deliver brand new school buildings across the country.”
