Wates Group has announced Tim Wates will be appointed company chair at its AGM in May.

He takes over from his cousin Sir James Wates CBE, who has held the post for 10 years. James Wates said “the time is now right to pass the baton”.

James will, however, continue to serve on the board and be actively involved in the business. This will include representing the company at external forums.

Tim joined Wates in 1993 and served on the board from 2006 to 2008 and again since 2011. He was appointed deputy chair in October 2022 and is also a trustee of a number of Wates Family charities.

He said it was an “honour” to take on the post of the 125-year-old family business, and to “continue our tradition of maintaining a long-term perspective and commitment to business as a force for good in society”.
