Laing O’Rourke has posted a video demonstrating how it installed three so-called "mega risers" at the 10-year Manchester Airport transformation programme works.
In May this year, the contractor installed the first of three giant design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA) risers on the site, nine months into the programme.
Manufactured offsite at Crown House Technologies Manufacturing facility in Oldbury in the West Midlands, the mega risers are made up of 48 multi-service risers containing ventilation, ductwork, water piping, electrical containment and heating services.
Each took around 10 weeks to manufacture but just four to five days to install on site.
Laing O’Rourke is delivering a £570m package of works at the airport, which includes an extension to the existing Terminal 2 building which means that once complete the terminal will be 150% bigger than the existing building.
