Mace has installed a huge steel beam weighing 62 tonnes in the Boiler House of Battersea Power Station, as work progresses on its revamp of the Grade II-listed building.
The 27m-long, 2.6m-deep beam transfers a load of 2,070 tonnes down the power station, taking seven floors above it and creating a column-free structure in the events centre below.
Mace transported the beam by road through London and installed it in a single lift.
One of the biggest cranes in Europe had to be used for the installation.
Mace was appointed as construction manager for Phase 2 of the Battersea Power Station development lat year, having worked on early preparatory works in 2013.
The Power Station includes 250 new retail, food and beverage units, as well as the events venue with capacity for 2,000 people, a chimney lift experience and a six-acre park and riverside. It also provides around 500,000 sq ft of new office space.
