Laing O’Rourke has released a video of its work to lift a huge steel bridge into place at Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2.
The 85t bridge is constructed of four welded sections, with the largest weighing 16 tonnes. The full length of the bridge, which links the terminal extension with a multi-storey car park, is 45m long, 6m wide and 3.5m high.
It was lifted into place with a 750t mobile crane with 204t of ballast, assisted by a 55t slave crane.
Project planning was started three months prior to the lift actually taking place.
Laing O’Rourke is currently delivering a £700m transformation programme as principal contractor.
The work will see Terminal 2 become 150% than previously, making it the focal point for the airport’s operations.
