The remnants of Genoa’s collapsed Morandi bridge have been demolished in a huge controlled explosion.
The bridge collapsed in August last year, killing 43 people, however some of the structure including two pylons remained.
Contractors used 550kg of explosives to demolish the structure at the weekend (28 June), in an operation that involved the evacuation of around 3,400 people living in the area.
A total of around 40,000 tons of steel and concrete came down as part of the operation, which was the culmination of a demolition project that started in February.
Italian companies Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri have been assigned the role of reconstructing the bridge.
The horrific collapse on 14 August last year sent dozens of vehicles plunging 30 metres to the ground below.
