Sir Robert McAlpine will oversee the £39m revamp of the Courtauld Institute of Art at Somerset House in London.
The contractor has won a construction manager role worth around £1m for the project, which is expected to see the closure of the Courtauld Gallery, home to masterpieces such as Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, for two years from September.
The Courtauld Institute of Art moved into the 18th century Grade-I-listed Somerset House in the Strand in 1989 and this will be its biggest redevelopment in its current home.
Around 143 sq m of floor space is set to be created through a reconfiguration and rationalisation of existing areas, while the main Great Room is set to be opened up.
The contract for the works is being let under a bespoke deal using a single-stage procurement route. Phase one of the programme, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will be worth £22m, with phase two worth £17m.
