Former CIOB president Sir James Wates CBE is giving a thought-provoking speech on construction industry change in December.
In ‘Total disruption: There has got to be a better way for construction’, the chair of Wates Group (pictured) will look at why, despite plenty of innovations in construction, none have managed to change the way we construct the majority of buildings.
Wates will look at why sectors like IT, manufacturing and pharmaceuticals have revolutionised their processes, leaving construction in their wake.
He will argue that construction needs total disruption, involving new business models that allow investment in innovation as well as properly training the next generation. New ways of working are needed that mean clients, consultants, contractors and the supply chain collaborate seamlessly.
The talk, by invitation only, is on 15 December from 6-9pm at Shangri-La, The Shard, London.

Spot on James
I’m in agreement with the observation by Sir J. Wates that other sectors have revolutionised their processes whilst construction has lagged behind. However, I believe the total disruption of construction methods should commence at the tertiary institutions, i.e. universities and colleges at the school of engineering and the built environment. Without input from academics and the graduates they produce then the proposed disruption would not be successful.
