A new initiative akin to the Samaritans for construction has been launched to tackle a the growing issue of poor mental health in the industry.
According to the Samaritans, construction workers are six times more likely to die of suicide rather than a fall. And every year, one in four people in the UK will experience either stress, anxiety or depression. In the most extreme cases, these issues can result in someone taking their life.
The aim of Mates in Mind will be to help raise awareness and understanding of poor mental health in the industry. It has been launched by the Health in Construction Leadership Group and the British Safety Council.
Working with a number of the industry’s leading companies, the initiative will introduce a new register where workers can complete a voluntary mental health course that will then be with them their entire working lives but also give them the opportunity to engage with mental health discussion.
