Lendlease’s Dennis Wilson was crowned 2015 Construction Manager of the Year for carrying off the £48m refurbishment of the National Theatre with aplomb. Leading up to this year’s event on Thursday night, we ask the reigning champion what it’s meant for him and what advice he has for the 2016 winner.
What sort of year have you had?
I’ve had an exceptional year. Winning the CMYA opened new avenues for me in my role as a mentor. I have been given the opportunity to engage people I would otherwise not have had access to, such as speaking to other construction professionals in Kuala Lumpur on behalf of the CIOB and to display the potential that can be found in the construction industry to those that I mentor, both inside and outside of the working environment.
In my role as an adviser, counsellor and guide, I’ve had the opportunity to demonstrate that the career path presented to graduates and trainees is not limited by their background and that international recognition of their abilities by their peers is within their ambition, if they so choose.
What’s your job now?
I’m operations director for Lendlease Europe responsible for London private clients and have been since April 2015. I am responsible for the management and delivery of a portfolio of projects within the London region. I am equally responsible for building on our capability within the arts sector along with developing our trainee and graduate intake.

What benefits did winning CMYA have?
It has not only significantly raised the profile of my capability but also Lendlease’s capability and breadth of experience throughout the industry.
Any unexpected benefits?
Surprisingly, yes. Having three sons whose lives are dominated by social media, they are now more aware of what it is I do, despite 35 years of me telling them on an almost daily basis! I didn’t think for one minute that winning the CMYA would be so inspiring to others and be such a help in my passion for being a role model for the next generation of construction professionals.
How did you celebrate?
I had a really big barbecue with the National Theatre team at my home as, without them, the CMYA would have been won by someone else. The CMYA is a reflection not just of my leadership through a difficult, demanding and complex project, but of their diligence, capability and professionalism to drive through my vision. My mum’s barbecued fish was the real star though.
Have you been back to the project?
Regularly, not just in my capacity as the project director but privately as a show goer to marvel at our achievement with the National Theatre. It is an outstanding venue and destination with a truly remarkable team ensuring that each and every performance hits the right note.
Any advice for this year’s winner?
Yes, revel in your achievement as it really is a pinnacle of your career. Do not be shy in using your success as recognition of you and your team’s capability in demonstrating true excellence in construction. Finally, ask the CIOB for as many copies of the October issue as you can carry as there are lots of relatives that need a copy!
