Prioritising safety in the powered access industry

Falls from the platform rank among the top causes of death and major injury in powered access.

Haulotte, the European leader of aerial work platforms, recently launched the FASTN universal active anchorage system.

Already awarded at various events and trade fairs – including the Grands Prix des Materiel – Chantiers de France, HIRE 24 Australia and Working at Height Awards 2024 – the FASTN patented system aims to bolster operator safety by ensuring secure lanyard attachment.

Maximising harness use by creating an anchoring reflex

The FASTN system is composed of two boxes, wired together and installed in the basket of the boom:

  • The ‘detection’ box ensures that the operator is safely connected to the MEWP. Pulling on a strap, the operator releases a hook to which they can attach the lanyard carabiner.
  • The ‘control box’ delivers alerts and also records all events to provide valuable safety data.

Four hazards that are detected:

  • Harness not attached – The operator is immediately alerted by an audible and visual alarm if using the machine without being attached to the FASTN system. If their lanyard is not anchored after a few seconds, FASTN also alerts the worksite with a blue flashing light and a louder alarm.
  • Operator fall or ejection – If the operator is anchored to FASTN and the system detects abnormal tension, it immediately alerts the worksite that the operator may have fallen or been ejected.
  • Operator unconscious or motionless – If the operator is anchored to FASTN and is inactive for 45 seconds, the system will issue an alert to indicate possible distress.
  • System bypass – If the operator attempts to bypass the FASTN system using anything other than the snap hook of their harness, the system will detect inactivity and activate the wake-up function to warn of potential misuse.

Optimising worksite safety through data utilisation

FASTN records all events occurring during the use of the aerial work platform. This data collection enables companies to assess safety on worksites and implement targeted prevention campaigns.

The FASTN system is designed for universal compatibility, adaptable to all types of boom lifts, including those from Haulotte and other manufacturers.
It is available for Haulotte booms in the RTJ, E, LE and SIGMA ranges. FASTN can be installed in less than 30 minutes on both new and existing machines. A turnkey retrofit kit is available to order from the MyHaulotte web platform or via the Haulotte teams.
