A US developer has revealed plans to build Ireland’s tallest building in Cork, surpassing the 22-storey Capital Dock in Dublin.
The new tower, proposed by New York-based but Irish-owned developer Tower Holdings Group, would stand 34 storeys tall and would contain 240 rooms and 25 serviced apartments.
It would be constructed as the centrepiece of the €200m (£181m) redevelopment of the Custom House Quay site in Cork.
US architect Gensler has designed the building, in association with local firm Henry J Lyons.
The overall development is expected to include retail, food and beverage businesses, office space and recreational areas which will be fully accessible to the public, as well as a programme of cultural events.
A planning application is expected to be lodged later this month. Permission has already been granted for another Tower development, a 15-storey, €20m (£18.1m) office building to be called the Prism, located near the city’s bus station.
Conor Lee, Tower Holdings Ireland’s director of operations, said: “As the tallest building in Ireland, the hotel itself will be a focal point for the city rising. Equally, the design is aimed at preserving the existing infrastructure for future generations through the addition of new tourism and commercial offerings … For the first time ever, this entire area will be fully opened up to the people of Cork.”
