Jamie Young, winner of the Novus 10 competition
The CIOB initiative for young construction professionals celebrates going from strength to strength.
Novus celebrated its 10th anniversary recently with a competition for construction students and young professionals. The CIOB asked them to talk about who or what it was that encouraged them to pursue a career in construction and how they hope to inspire others.
The entries were judged by an internal panel with three finalists then voted for by the public. With over 50% of the votes, Jamie Young from Wates was the winner. Jamie’s video entry shared how his father inspired him into a career in construction and how he strives to encourage others.
Jamie won the opportunity to interview past president Rebecca Thompson for the next edition of Construction Manager.
“Hopefully it has inspired some of the younger generation to get involved in the industry. It is certainly a decision I do not regret.”

“I am happy to have won,” said Jamie. “Hopefully it has inspired some of the younger generation to get involved in the construction industry. It is certainly a decision that I do not regret.”
To also mark its 10th year, the London HUB will be hosting a “Who are CIOB Novus?” event on 21 November from 6pm at the University of Westminster, Marylebone campus.
The event is to give people the opportunity to learn more about the Novus group and the people that make it great. There will be short presentations from a variety of Novus members (past and present) and a chance to network afterwards.
Three construction professionals have also shared how Novus has helped their careers in a blog as part of the anniversary celebrations. Read it at www.ciob.org/blog/what-novus-means-me
Novus continues to grow: earlier this year saw the launch of a Novus group in Edinburgh and another is launching in Preston on 11 October. The launch will be held at Review Preston, a wine & cocktail bar, and will include a cocktail masterclass. There will be Prosecco and nibbles, games and networking.
Novus Preston has two groups based in Cumbria and Lancashire and will be supported by Novus members from Liverpool and Manchester as well as local students and committee members from Liverpool, Manchester and Preston Hubs.
Dublin is also busy with Novus activity and there are vacancies on the Truro and Exeter Groups: if you want to be part of Novus get in touch with [email protected]
