Paul Marlow, a construction manager at McAleer & Rushe, was crowned Construction Manager of the Year 2016 at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel yesterday (September 15) in a night dominated by winners from family owned firms.
He was awarded his prize for the £29m project to build a 14-storey student block with 759 student flats for Unite Students. The block at Angel Lane in Stratford was completed in 80 weeks.
Marlow, from County Tyrone Northern Ireland, who won the Residential Over Seven Storeys category before being chosen from the 11 category winners for the overall title, said he was shocked and speechless to win the award and paid tribute to his team and the CIOB. He delivered the Angel Lane project on time and on budget despite the start being delayed by two months due to land issues. Marlow radically revised the building strategy to save two months from the programme.
Marlow’s McAleer & Rushe colleague Ciaran Tiffney won the category for Seven Storeys and Under. It is the first time the Northern Irish company has won an award.
Other family firms, Willmott Dixon, Wates and Sir Robert McAlpine, each won two categories apiece (see below) from the 86 finalists.
Paul Nash, CIOB president, who spoke at the event packed with 800 people, said: “To be a CMYA finalist is a fantastic achievement and will stay with you for the rest of your life.”
Chris Blythe, chief executive at the CIOB, commented: “This has been another extraordinary year for CMYA. In every category we have seen project managers of all ages delivering exceptional projects, mastering multiple challenges, and achieving world-class quality with exemplary leadership skills.
“It’s the first year that we have seen the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) from the conception to completion of many projects. This is an important milestone in the evolution of our industry, indicating the increasing complexity and sophistication of built environment work and the pivotal role that construction managers play within project teams.
“Congratulations to Paul and all our finalists and medallists. You are taking our industry to the next level.”
