Work is underway to install an underdeck scaffold structure on the Tyne Bridge from the Newcastle tower to the Gateshead tower.

Esh Construction is working with specialist scaffolding contractor Infrastructure Site Solutions to assemble the suspended scaffold. The operation involves a team working underneath the bridge 26m above the River Tyne.

Operatives will be attached by safety harnesses as they work their way carefully across the iconic structure. A safety boat will be present in the event of an emergency.

The latest scaffolding phase will measure 100m long by 11m wide and will allow operatives to undertake close-up inspections underneath the bridge before the task of cleaning, grit blasting and repainting begins.

Esh Construction said the scaffold components weigh more than 13,000 tonnes – equivalent to six London Eyes – and due to the loading constraints of the bridge, it must be installed in 20 different phases.

Esh Construction is delivering the four-year restoration of Grade II-listed Tyne Bridge for Newcastle and Gateshead councils.
