Government seeks new contractor for Grenfell site

Grenfell principal contractor

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) has launched a tender process for a new principal contractor for the ongoing maintenance and security of the Grenfell Tower site.

Government rules and public money-spending guidance require that the contract be reprocured to ensure value for money.

Potential bidders must complete a 16-page non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to access the tender documentation for the £21.3m contract. Signing NDAs is standard practice in a procurement that requires access to sensitive information.

The three-year contract will start in July 2024, when the current contract with Deconstruct UK will expire. Previous contractors include Wates Property Services.

The principal contractor is responsible for monitoring the tower and site on a constant basis, maintenance, including annual rewrapping of the tower, and carrying out regular checks of the props (metal supports) in the tower, the hoardings and gates, lighting, alarms and security system.

DLUHC said the local community will be able to attend the bidders’ presentations, give feedback and ask questions, as well as meet the winning contractor when appointed.

The closing date to submit a bid is 26 January.
