Developer World Wheel Company has received planning consent, subject to conditions, for building a 140m high observation wheel on Newcastle’s Quayside.
The wheel, designed by architect Concept-I and called The Whey Aye in recognition of its location, is claimed to be Europe’s largest of its kind at 5m taller than the London Eye.
The Whey Aye will be erected as the showpiece of a wider £100m Giants on the Quayside development, which will include a three-storey sports and family entertainment complex.
The Council’s cabinet member for employment and investment, Ged Bell, said: “The idea of one of the world’s biggest observational wheels operating here in Newcastle has captured a lot of people’s imaginations.
“The development has the potential to be a real game changer, creating hundreds of jobs for local residents and attracting thousands of new visitors, which can only be good for shops, restaurants, cafes and local businesses.”
Phase One of the plans also includes a 700 sq m LED advertising and public information screen. Newcastle City Council’s planning committee has granted planning permission for the Whey Aye wheel and its associated buildings, while deferring judgement on a large advertising and public information LED screen to a further planning meeting.
The World Wheel Company says the overall Giants on the Quayside development will also feature a ‘Giant Sport Deck’ of covered five-a-side football pitches, tennis courts, a ‘virtual golf club’ and Quayside Golf Club bar.
