Dame Judith Hackitt
The Industry Safety Steering Group (ISSG), set up in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster and chaired by Dame Judith Hackitt, has warned that some parts of construction are still too slow in making progress on building and fire safety.
The ISSG has issued its first report on the progress of culture change across the sector, as the government consults on its proposals to implement the recommendations made by Hackitt in her independent review.
While it welcomed the progress made by representatives from the industry who have attended ISSG meetings and praised the Competence Steering Group for making “significant progress” on its proposals for an overarching system for competence, the ISSG warned that outside early adopters prioritising building and fire safety, progress across parts of construction had been slow.
It said: “[This is] due in part to its fragmented nature. In too many cases, organisations remain unwilling to share best practice.”
It warned there was “still much more work to do to ensure that the message of culture change reaches the whole of industry” and that the industry needed to have a plan of work to address this in more detail.
