Shaylor Group framework director Martin Chambers, a former president of the CIOB and a regular contributor to Construction Manager, has been named Achiever of the Year 2014 at the Constructing Excellence Awards, held as part of the Celebrating Construction Awards last month.
Presented for “outstanding performance or influence by an individual who has been inspirational in the opinion of the sector peer group during the past 12 months”, Chambers received the award due to his “leading role in the successful repositioning of Shaylor Group plc as one of the country’s most sought-after SME contractors”.
Shaylor Group is a £70m turnover second generation family owned business involved in general contracting, repair and maintenance works and specialist fit-outs.

Chambers was named Regional Achiever of the Year for the west midlands region in April was pitted against the other regional winners including Steve Baker, group manager of construction management services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and Osborne’s Fred Mills, creator of BIM One Million.
Chambers was recognised for having played a pivotal role in the CIOB as president in 2007/8, as a former chair of Birmingham’s Family Housing Association and director of the West Midlands Centre for Construction Excellence and its successor organisation MCCE.
Chambers also has strong links with academia, being a governor of the University of Wolverhampton, external examiner with Aston University and a visiting professor at the University of Westminster.
Born in Manchester, Chambers became an adopted son of the west midlands after graduating from Aston University in 1981. Having entered the industry as a sponsored trainee with George Wimpey, he has gone on to oversee and manage a number of companies, major projects and national programmes of work.
After the event, Chambers commented: “I am honoured to receive such a coveted award, particularly considering the calibre of the other finalists.
